Religion comprise of an important part of Indian culture. As a country, India has been origin to many religions viz. Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism. India as a country has also provided homage to the followers of Christianity, Islam, Zoroastrainism and Judaism.

Over the ages, India has been a country where wide range of religions co-exists to share the mutual customs and traditions. While the co-existence of various such religions is a fact, the other fact which exists is that most of the religions have derived their roots from Hinduism.

While the religious books of many of the offspring’s religions are read by the respective followers, books on Hindu Religions will be highlighted in this article. The following are the most important Hindu religious books-

The Vedas -

Amongst all the Hindu religions, the Vedas belong the oldest of the category. There are four types of Vedas – Rig Veda, Samar Veda, Yajur Veda and Atharva Veda. Also, from amongst all these, the rig veda is the oldest of all. These Veda’s contain deep spiritual values and consists of chants, hyms, metaphysical preaching as also rituals which were followed in old age India.

Upanishads:

They bring together the concepts of atman (soul) and Brahman (the ultimate truth) and explain how both of them are connected through spirituality and its different forms like meditation and so on.

Puranas:

These books narrate the entire history of the creation of the universe from its creation to devastation to successive heirs of the kings, demigods and brave heroes and so on. In all, there are around eighteen such Puranas which are broadly divided into three divisions viz. Bhrama, Vishnu and Shiva which are named after Hindu God’s.

Bhagavad Gita:

The Bhagavad Gita or the Gita as it is often called is one of the most sacred Holy Book of Hindus and consists of philosophical exchanges between the Lord Krishna and the warrior prince – Arjuna. Overall, the book is an passage or more neatly said and an excerpt of the great Epic- Mahabharata. It entails the details of devotion, duty, meditation, selflessness as well as other subjects of Hindu philosophy.

The ‘Manusmriti' also forms a part of the Hindu religious books and typifies the social codes of the caste system related to the Brahmins.
